Nicely Made in China is proud to announce that last night ceramic and porcelain makers Julie Progin and her partner Jesse McLin from Latitude, achieved recognition from the industry by being among the 40 winners of the Perspective magazine « 40 under 40″ competition 2011 which celebrates excellence in the fields of architecture, interiors and product design.

NMiC featured Julie and Jesse in an article last November.

IGUZZINI WATCHES

China is now the world’s third largest market for the consumption of luxury goods, behind the US and Japan. And according to some studies, by 2015, it will have become the largest! Today the luxury goods come mainly from foreign brands, but things are changing with the steady emergence of home-grown brands. Iguzzini Watches is one of these. Originally created in 1903 in Shanghai by Italian Federico Iguzzini, the company closed its doors around the middle of the 20th century. Fast forward to early 21st century when two Franco-Mexican brothers, Stephane and Lander Michel, on hearing about Mr Iguzzini’s story, decided to buy the name and give the company a new lease of life. As 2011 arrives Nicely Made in China (NMiC) is happy to give centre stage to a very young company – Chinese Timekeeper (CTK). Adrien Choux recently opened CTK, selling its first watches in early December. In Asia-Pacific for 10 years, Adrien got interested in the way Chinese relate to time and the history of time while working for a prestigious Swiss watchmaker.  In an interview with NMiC he discussed the ancient watch tower of Kaifeng and Chinese craftmanship. DANNY FANG – PRODUCT DESIGN

This week Nicely Made in China’s (NMiC) delivery brings us back to Hong Kong, a city which could well be dubbed ‘the city of design’ as it is literally teeming with interesting designers.Danny Fang, as his name does not suggest, is Dutch. Danny’s great grandfather was Chinese, although Danny grew up in Amsterdam and graduated from the Eindhoven Design Academy in The Netherlands in 1998. He decided to move to Hong Kong in 2006 after spending 6 years at the studio of the renowned Marcel Wanders. In answering NMiC questions, he talked about good design, employee shortage in the Pearl river delta and Western misconceptions about China. This week Nicely Made in China (NMiC) presents a couple who has decided to take on one of China’s traditional crafts – porcelain. Born into a Hong Kong-based Swiss family, Julie Progin and her American husband Jesse McLin, have recently created Latitude Design Studio, a young and promising company. SEAN DIX / ARCHITECT & DESIGNER

Design, among other things, is increasingly part of our daily lives. Having said that, it has been a while since Nicely Made in China (NMiC) presented a designer. So, this week NMiC is happy to introduce Hong Kong-based American architect-designer Sean Dix. After years spent in Fiji, Micronesia and the Philippines (in his youth) and later, many years spent working in Europe (Milan), Sean decided that Asia was the place to be.  In 2008 he landed at Chek Lap Kok with family in tow. He recently spoke with NMiC, discussing his influences and what it is like to work in this part of the world. After the coast of Fujian, Nicely Made in China takes you to the South China Sea to meet Adam Healy one of the two owners of Benpat International. Based in Shek-O on the South-East coast of Hong Kong Island, Benpat makes quality surfboards -as well as kiteboards, skateboards, nipper boards and stand-up paddle boards- all made in China and sells them all over the world. Adam, 26, is Australian and was raised in Hong Kong. He sat with NMiC and explained how surfboards are made.

Adam, can you give us some information about your company?

Benpat International was created in 1990 by John Patkin and I came onboard in 2008. Most of our production is for exports, mainly to Australia, the UK and the US.

NMIC has asked a few questions to Chiru endurance bikes CEO Pierre-Arnaud Le Magnan.

Pierre-Arnaud when and why did you start Chiru Endurance Bikes?

We started in February 2009. We make mountain bikes exclusively and only made of carbon. It is a product specially designed for endurance races and adventure racing.
