This week Nicely Made in China (NMiC) is happy to feature its first shoe designer. Londoner, Alison Mary Ching Yeung, half-Chinese, half-British, created the brand Mary Ching in 2009 in Shanghai . On her way to becoming the “Louboutin of Shanghai” (according to French fashion magazine ELLE) Mary Ching has become in a short time a much sought after brand by fashionistas in China and beyond.  It has already caught the eye of stars such as Beyonce, Cameron Diaz and Zhang Ziyi. In a fast-paced phone interview, Alison tells NMiC what drove her to design shoes.

Alison how did you become a shoe designer?

I’ve always had a passion for fashion and always knew I’d be a designer. My father kept saying I had a sickness for shoes, so I decided to make it a disease. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion from Kings College, and I also studied business management at university. I came to China in 2005 – for the first few years I sourced factories and learned Mandarin. I created Mary Ching in February 2009.

How would you describe your style?

I focus on the tension and balance between the ying and the yang. I’d say Mary Ching style is sexy but fragile as well as fashionable and vulnerable with a touch of East meets West flair. A typical Mary Ching client is a young professional woman. Chinese women take pride in how they look whatever they earn. They now have the guts to show they have their own style and taste.

You seem to have a very sensual approach when it comes to the type of material you use – can you tell us more?

I like to mix different types of materials: lace and mink, snake skin, leather, crystal. Our signature is a mixture of all these products. At Mary Ching we only work with local artisans and local products.

How many collections do you create each year?

There’s an autumn-winter and a spring-summer collection. We add new colors as we go along.

Where can NMiC readers buy your products?

In different locations: we have our own shop in Shanghai on Ferguson Lane and on our website. Prices for our shoes begin at 2400 Rmb.

Our cashmere slippers with crystal balls and mink pompons are for sale on Cathay Pacific and Dragonair flights for 990 Rmb.
