A beautiful carpet can make the world of difference to a room. So says Florian Pucher – architect and interior designer. In his 7 years in China, Florian has tried his hand at different things including ceramics and furniture making, but it is carpet design which has brought him success. Nicely Made in China (NMiC) met him first over a year ago when things were just taking off. Since then a lot has happened, as he tells us in a recent interview.
Florian how did it all begin?
In 2007, while I was working on an interior design project, I met a Chinese factory owner who said he could reproduce any design onto a carpet. As I had some designs ready, I asked him to work on one. It looked very nice, we got along well, and so we worked on two more. Then in 2009 I received an award from ELLE DECORATION and a client from Bahrein bought a piece. This encouraged me to work on the website and now there are about 600 websites linked to mine!
How do you create your designs?
Architects are constantly looking at plans, maps and photographs taken from the sky. I am fascinated by these aerial patterns! I always choose window seats when I fly! My designs reflect the pattern of fields seen from above, hence the collection name “Landcarpet”. I represent the different heights of plants and trees by varying the topography of the carpets – they are not completely flat. There can be a 4 / 5 mm difference across the carpet surface. I then have to make sure that the colors match and the proportions are pleasing to the eye. If something doesn’t work I go back to the drawing board.
What are the carpets made of and how big are they?
The carpets are made exclusively of New-Zealand wool and we come in two sizes: 120 cm X 180 cm and 180 cm X 240 cm. We have decided to make 88 carpets of each design, which makes them quite exclusive. (8 is considered a lucky number in China). Each piece is numbered and delivered with a signed certificate. Carpets are made on request with a delivery time of 4 – 5 weeks. The small carpets cost 8,000 Rmb (China) / US$ 1,200 (International) and the big ones 14,000 Rmb (China) / US$2,100 (International).
What’s the future for you?
I am currently working on new designs from South America and Asia, and I am also looking for distributors around the world.
Where can NMiC readers buy your carpets?
At the moment we only sell through our website: www.florianpucher.com/
