The simple pleasure of a cup of tea can be a very welcome break from the frenetic pace of life. But how to know which tea is best, when there are hundreds to choose from: Lapsang Souchong, Pu’er, Oolong, white tea, green tea…and so on. Nicely Made in China’s (NMiC) guest this week is Charlene Wang, a Californian of Chinese origin. She’s a tea aficionado and the founder of Tranquil Tuesdays, a new player in the world of tea merchants. She has taken it upon herself to bring the best tea leaves from China to the thirsty world.

Recently, when exploring the Sheung Wan area of Hong Kong, Nicely Made in China (NMiC) stumbled upon Tung street which is chok-a-blok with quirky and interesting little shops selling some of the best products Hong Kong and international designers have to offer. Nicely Made in China is proud to announce that last night ceramic and porcelain makers Julie Progin and her partner Jesse McLin from Latitude, achieved recognition from the industry by being among the 40 winners of the Perspective magazine “40 under 40” competition 2011 which celebrates excellence in the fields of architecture, interiors and product design.

NMiC featured Julie and Jesse in an article last November.

Born into a Hong Kong-based Swiss family, Julie Progin and her American husband Jesse McLin, have recently created Latitude Design Studio, a young and promising company. The Nicely Made in China product of the week is as old as China itself.  Chinese ceramics, since it is ceramics and porcelain we’ll be talking about, are back in fashion again. Hai Chen, Blue Shanghai White owner and main designer grants NMiC an interview.

Hai Chen, how did you become a ceramist and when did you start Blue Shanghai White?

I studied fine arts and ceramics from 1987 to 1991 at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts and at Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts & Design from 1992 until 1996. I created my company in 2003.
