Hong Kong-born fashion designer Carrie Chan, 32, got her Master’s Degree in Fashion Design in 2008 at the University of Westminster in the UK after a few years as a fashion and lifestyle journalist at the South China Morning Post. Then, in October 2011 she launched the first RI.by.CARRIE collection and made a name for herself with leg wear and hand printed tights. Nicely Made in China (NMiC) met Carrie in her Hong Kong studio at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Shek Kip Mei.

Eyewear comes in all shapes, materials and colours. Yet choosing the pair of glasses that not only solves your eyesight problems but also flatters and fits you perfectly can be challenging. While trying to understand why finding the perfect pair of specs can be so tricky, Nicely Made in China (NMiC) met Tom Davies, a London-based eyewear designer and his assistant Stephen Jakub. Tom’s design studio is in Mortlake, west London, and it is from here he produces his handmade eyewear, which is manufactured in China. In the following interview Tom and Stephen tell the story behind the remarkable craftsmanship required to make their handmade bespoke spectacles and why they’re proud of their China connection.

We’ve barely closed the beach house and September is upon us. It’s time to think of children returning to school, buying new clothes and maybe new furniture for their bedrooms. So at Nicely Made in China (NMiC) we’ve decided to feature a product specially made for children. We met with Italian designer Silvia Marlia who these days lives in Hong Kong. Silvia grew up in Milan surrounded by designers, and trained as an assistant Montessori teacher. She recently created Sand, a new Chinese brand of furniture specially designed for children. In the following interview she tells us all about her motivation to design furniture for children.

MPMP / FASHION DESIGN

2 years ago, armed with a masters degree from the Vienna University of Applied Arts, Kathrin Reinfurth headed off to Beijing.  There she created fashion brand MPMP – it stands for Magnetosphere Prospecting and Monitoring Program. Today she’s mixing art, science and fashion and exhibits her creations in China and in Europe. Nicely Made in China (NMiC) spoke to Katrin about her experiences and what she’s bringing to fashion design.

This is exactly what Liza Serratore and Claire Russo – two young American entrepreneurs based in Shanghai – have done with ‘Nankeen’ in creating LuRu Home.  They are determined to make it a household name, not just in China but way beyond too. Bamboo groves have been a feature of Chinese flora for thousands of years. And humans have found many different uses for this, the largest member of the grass family, varying from building material to medicine and musical instruments. Its many qualities have long been favored by furniture designers too, among them Christine Richard, a Hong Kong-based “design publisher” (“editeur de design” in French) who recently launched Nookha, a designer furniture brand. In this interview with Nicely Made in China (NMiC) she tells us why she chooses to use bamboo and why part of her production is (nicely) made in China.

Happy birthday!!  Today Nicely Made in China (NMiC) celebrates its second birthday. On 22nd April 2010 the new website bearing the unlikely name with ‘Nicely Made’ and ‘China’ in the same sentence, raised a few eyebrows and recorded its first visits – 13 to be precise – from 9 unique visitors. Two years later we are proud to report over 100,000 visits – from 74,000 unique visitors!
