Hong Kong-born fashion designer Carrie Chan, 32, got her Master’s Degree in Fashion Design in 2008 at the University of Westminster in the UK after a few years as a fashion and lifestyle journalist at the South China Morning Post. Then, in October 2011 she launched the first RI.by.CARRIE collection and made a name for herself with leg wear and hand printed tights. Nicely Made in China (NMiC) met Carrie in her Hong Kong studio at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Shek Kip Mei.

: Tom Davies, the London-based bespoke eyewear designer produces his spectacles in Shenzhen.

: Buffalo Horn spectacles by Tom Davies: designed in Britain and “nicely” hand made in China.

: All Tom Davies creations are hand made in the factory the company owns in Shenzhen, Southern China. The bespoke eyewear are mainly made of cotton acetate, titanium and buffalo horn.

: After the client’s measurements are taken by an optician part of Tom Davies’s network, they’re sent to the factory in Shenzhen where 16 people will work on a pair of bespoke glasses.

Eyewear comes in all shapes, materials and colours. Yet choosing the pair of glasses that not only solves your eyesight problems but also flatters and fits you perfectly can be challenging. While trying to understand why finding the perfect pair of specs can be so tricky, Nicely Made in China (NMiC) met Tom Davies, a London-based eyewear designer and his assistant Stephen Jakub. Tom’s design studio is in Mortlake, west London, and it is from here he produces his handmade eyewear, which is manufactured in China. In the following interview Tom and Stephen tell the story behind the remarkable craftsmanship required to make their handmade bespoke spectacles and why they’re proud of their China connection.

: Italian designer and Sand’s founder Silvia Marlia designs furniture for children. She’s holding the pencil tray, one of her creations, that helps keep some order on your child’s desk.

We’ve barely closed the beach house and September is upon us. It’s time to think of children returning to school, buying new clothes and maybe new furniture for their bedrooms. So at Nicely Made in China (NMiC) we’ve decided to feature a product specially made for children. We met with Italian designer Silvia Marlia who these days lives in Hong Kong. Silvia grew up in Milan surrounded by designers, and trained as an assistant Montessori teacher. She recently created Sand, a new Chinese brand of furniture specially designed for children. In the following interview she tells us all about her motivation to design furniture for children.

: Katrin Reinfurt, the fashion designer behind the brand MPMP wearing the magnetic landscape scarf made out of exclusive silk. Available in various prints: sky, water and forest. A special treatment makes the scarf glow in the sunlight.

: The Diving in the Nature dress is made of silk washed in a silicon bath to give it an extremely soft and comfy feel by Katrin Reinfurt / MPMP

: The raincoat by Katrin Reinfurt has closed seams and a wire runs along the edge of the hood to change its shape. It’s made of reflective fabric which gives a changing image and it also catches ligths in the dark.

2 years ago, armed with a masters degree from the Vienna University of Applied Arts, Kathrin Reinfurth headed off to Beijing. There she created fashion brand MPMP – it stands for Magnetosphere Prospecting and Monitoring Program. Today she’s mixing art, science and fashion and exhibits her creations in China and in Europe. Nicely Made in China (NMiC) spoke to Katrin about her experiences and what she’s bringing to fashion design.

: Over 1000 authentic pieces of furniture from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties are displayed on 4000 sq. meters in Mr Ke Lema’s museum in Tianjin.

: One of Mr Kele Ma’s carpenter carving the door of a scented rosewood cabinet with dragon patterns. This type of cabinet was popular during the Qing Dynasty.

Much has been lost in China’s rush for modernity, but Nicely Made in China’s guest this week, Mr Kele Ma, proves the exception. He has devoted his life to salvaging countless pieces of beautifully handcrafted ancient furniture which can now be seen at the museum he recently opened in Tianjin.

: Christine Richard, Hong Kong-based founder of Nookha, the design bamboo furniture.

: The “Lily” collection: low-level lacquered round moso bamboo tables designed by Macon & Lesquoy for “Nookha Design”.

: Hong Kong-based French designer Stéphane Bulle designed those tables made of betung bamboo for “Nookha Design”. They come in 3 sizes and 4 different colors.

Bamboo groves have been a feature of Chinese flora for thousands of years. And humans have found many different uses for this, the largest member of the grass family, varying from building material to medicine and musical instruments. Its many qualities have long been favored by furniture designers too, among them Christine Richard, a Hong Kong-based “design publisher” (“editeur de design” in French) who recently launched Nookha, a designer furniture brand. In this interview with Nicely Made in China (NMiC) she tells us why she chooses to use bamboo and why part of her production is (nicely) made in China.
